My client is a VP at a Fortune 50 company, and for months she'd been doing the work. Real essentialism. Picking the one project that mattered most to her organization and saying no to everything that didn't align with it. And she was nervous about it. Because every time she said no, a little voice whispered: this is going to hurt you. They're going to think you're not committed. Not helpful. Not a team player. Then her boss called a meeting. She walked in braced for the conversation she'd been dreading. Instead, he said this: "You're doing such great work. Is there anything else I can take off your plate so you can focus on this project?" His comment was the opposite of what she expected. She was so worried that saying no would damage her career. What her leader actually saw was focus. She was working on the project he valued, the project the organization valued, the project with the biggest economic impact on the business. That's what gets noticed. Not the volume of yeses. She delivered the project. Got great results. And then... nothing happened. She got antsy. "Why haven't I been promoted yet? Is this actually working?" Here's something I want you to remember: in large organizations, there is lag time between doing something great and seeing the reward. Promotions, pay, org changes, these things move through long processes, especially at giant companies. The gap between impact and recognition is not a sign it isn't working. It's just the machine catching up. Four months later, she gets on our call and says, "I have the BEST news!"The biggest bonus of her life. Just under six figures. $98,000, when her previous best was $40,000. Her husband, who is wonderful and was celebrating right alongside her, told her, "You made more in one day than I made in an entire year." Here's the part that gets me. She had no idea her current role could even produce a bonus like that. It's one of the reasons she kept eyeing other roles, thinking she'd have to leave to earn more, even though she loved where she was. When she asked her boss about it, he told her it was always within his decision making. The difference was the impact of the project. Sometimes it's not the role. It's the project. Which is why project selection is one of the most important skills an executive can build. And then one more thing happened. She was surprised at a recognition event with an award for excellence, in front of 400 leaders. She told me the award was amazing, but what meant even more were her peers coming up to her saying "you deserve this so much" and "how do you even sleep with how much you get done?" She just smiled. Because here's her secret: she's working fewer hours than she ever has. Not more hustle. More focus. The discipline to say no to everything that doesn't matter so she could say a full yes to the thing that did. I'm so very proud of the woman she's become and the recognition and happiness she's getting to savor across all areas of her life. These are the fruits of the labor. Of doing the work. Of rewiring our brains and leading an intentional 5% life.
