I couldn't decide what to tell you

I sat down to write this email and I genuinely could not pick a topic.

I didn't know if I should tell you that four different women inside the pH+ Lab started new roles this month. Promotions, internal moves, external offers. Four. In one month. $70k more in an internal role. $300k more in an external role. A boss who says of course don't miss the pre-school party. Getting back into the field she's been missing. Real women. Growing their Pay & Happiness at the same time.

I didn't know if I should tell you about the happiness wins. Clients who never once focused on joy, who within a couple of weeks restructured their entire weekends and are having more fun with their spouses and kids than they've had in years. A client who didn't bring her laptop on vacation for the first time. A client who bought herself flowers.

I didn't know if I should tell you about the women taking their power back. One client said no to her mother-in-law for the first time ever. Another taught her admin how to stop interrupting, how to batch work, how to come prepared. And when the old behavior crept back in, she held the line: "We have time for this at our 4:00 standup, so we'll review it then."

I didn't know if I should tell you how much fun I'm having this summer and how in love I am with my schedule and my pool. When we built it, I said it would bring my family together. I expected it. I planned for it. And now I get to watch it come true, day after day. That's the thing about designing your life like a 5%er on purpose: it actually works.

I didn't know if I should tell you how into fitness I am. It's something I haven't shared much, but it has truly changed my energy, my confidence, and my identity. I'm now the person who does what she says she's going to do. This summer I joined a new group training program with other women, and watching working moms prioritize their strength is one of the coolest things I've seen. Or that so many of my clients start hormone replacement therapy through our coaching because they finally admit something's off and they want to sleep and feel like themselves again. Or how weightlifting has transformed my body and my life, and why strength training matters more, not less, as we get older. Or how I've kept 35 pounds off for four years through the most simple consistent plan (supplements, nutrition, sleep, stress management, exercise).

I didn't know if I should tell you what I'm getting coached on right now. Yes, your coach has a coach. I'm working on my next set of up-level goals, and I'm being coached on parenting because I want to be intentional about what my values are, how they are different than how I grew up... (anyone else raised on guilt and shame?) and how I share them, so I don't make my kids feel judged but rather guided and supported. Letting them learn the hard way is still something I'm working on. Because I didn't graduate from this work. Nobody does. We're all always evolving.

And then I realized why I couldn't decide.

Because this is the whole point. When your life is actually working and you join the 5%, there's too much good happening to fit in one email.

Career wins AND marriage wins AND boundary wins AND pool floats AND heavy squats AND getting coached myself. Not one at the expense of the others.

Performance and happiness are not opposites. This inbox is the proof.

So you tell me. Hit reply with the number of the story you want the full version of:

  1. Four new roles in one month (how they did it)
  2. The joy overhaul (restructuring weekends, generating your own fun)
  3. Taking your power back (the boundary scripts)
  4. Strength, Supplements, Nutrition, and HRT (how simple it actually can be)
  5. What I'm getting coached on (up-level goals and intentional parenting)

I'll write the winner next week.

The career and the life. Both.

Your coach, cheerleader, and accountability partner, Shayla

Have you ever been told that setting boundaries at work is a career limiting move? That you need to prove yourself first. Keep your head down. Don't ask for too much too soon. Especially in a new role. One of my clients just started a new job. Before she left her old one, she sat down with multiple people on the executive committee and asked for their advice. Every single one of them said the same thing. Don't expect to see your family much in the first year. Earn flexibility before you ask...

My client is a VP at a Fortune 50 company, and for months she'd been doing the work. Real essentialism. Picking the one project that mattered most to her organization and saying no to everything that didn't align with it. And she was nervous about it. Because every time she said no, a little voice whispered: this is going to hurt you. They're going to think you're not committed. Not helpful. Not a team player. Then her boss called a meeting. She walked in braced for the conversation she'd...
